Dear Prospective Family,
The five mile drive down Figueroa Mountain Road is a road to school like no other. Overlooked by the peak of Grass Mountain lies Midland. Although isolated, and seemingly lonely, Midland has one of the tightest knit communities a person could be a part of.
Founded in 1932, this small high school was built by students. Through present day and many years to come, our school is run by its hard-working inhabitants. The jobs program allows students to engage with each other through a fun and rewarding experience while opening doors to life skills needed in the future. We learn the importance of working together, keeping in mind that the incompletion of a job affects the whole community. A “needs versus wants” mindset is carried with us as we seek a minimalist lifestyle.
A key part in Midland’s learning curriculum is engagement with the natural world. All grades interact outside, from Midland 101 freshman year, to marine biology senior year. Outdoor leadership is a Midland-unique activity students may participate in as a sport. It is based around exploration beyond the classroom, on and off campus. Those who complete outdoor leadership, OL, have the opportunity to become a Midland Ranger. Rangers are able to lead trips outside for other students without a faculty member present. Being a ranger tests your responsibility and leadership with and around your peers.
With responsibility comes a unique freedom. Half holidays, a free afternoon at Midland, and weekends, are times for students to be on the property with friends. The campus is surrounded by trails for hiking and mountain biking. Afternoons are spent at the Reservoir or the farm, where we relax after all of our hard work.
Midland has been in our thoughts throughout this year. We have counted down from months, to weeks, and now to days. Anticipation of return, from faculty and students alike, builds. We are all waiting to be driving the last stretch and turning the last corner. We are all waiting for the welcome from Grass Mountain, some of us for the first time. We are all waiting for the countdown of time to turn to a countdown of miles.
Warmly,
Emma '23

A Truly Tight-Knit Community
"I love the feeling of having a support system that is made up of people my age. I love the feeling of knowing that I can lean on people my age whenever I have a hard time. For that reason, the Midland community is amazing." - Porter '21
"Don't worry about being nervous about boarding school or Midland! There is no community more accepting than here." - Zoe '23
"I was pretty nervous about transferring to Midland as a sophomore, mostly because I was worried that everyone would be so close and I would be left out. But after going through the process and seeing it again the next year, I've realized a few things: Midlanders are always so excited make new friends every fall, and the more you let your guard down and show your amazingly unique self, the quicker you melt into the wonderful community around you." - Raymond '21
"I'll take care of that" — A Culture of Helping Hands
What’s remarkable is that volunteering at Midland isn’t remarkable. Midland students jump to the task when they identify a community need. Be it covering dish house duty for a classmate, Squibbing (picking up trash anytime you see it laying around), or lending a shoulder to a friend in need, our students bravely endeavor to be the best stewards of our land and citizens of our community.
