Dear Prospective Family,
Through the past few months, the Midland community has come together in a beautiful web of Zoom calls, online games, and emails, and we are so excited for you to learn more about Midland, even from afar!
Our names are Raymond Carr and Melia Collard, and we are this year’s Head Prefects. As Head Prefects, we act as the liaison between the faculty and students, as well as support for our senior classmates in their leadership roles throughout campus.
I’m Melia, and I am from a small town in Northern California, where I live on a ranch with my parents, my younger brothers and our two dogs. As an eighth grader, I chose Midland because of my love for the outdoors, and the sense of community I saw among students. Even in the most difficult times, the Midland community has supported me — it has become a second home.
I’m Raymond, and I live outside of Reno, Nevada. I transferred to Midland sophomore year because I wanted a hands-on education in a place where I felt completely supported. At Midland I finally found a place where I was accepted for being true to myself, and then had room to grow into the student leader I am today.
A few of our favorite things about Midland include picking fresh fruits and veggies from the farm, exploring the beautiful property nestled in the Santa Ynez Valley, and most of all the connections that we have made with our peers and the faculty.
We know that this is a tumultuous time for everyone in many different ways, so we are hoping to bring a bit of our experience to you, in an effort to help you to learn more about why you might choose Midland. It gives us so much hope to hear of new students curious about Midland, and we hope that the information below deepens your interest!
We can’t wait for you to learn more about our incredible school,
Melia Collard and Raymond Carr Head Prefects

What Makes a Midlander?
We're often asked what our "typical model Midland student" looks like, and the answer is, there isn't one! We're looking for students who are ready for more; if you're a student who wants more than just college prep and craves life prep (and admissions into a great fit college too!), this is the place for you. The typical Midlander is ready to take on a challenge, immerse themselves in a community, and make a difference — does that sound like you?

"[The Midland community] is unlike anything I have been apart of before. The people I do jobs with and live with have become my closest friends and I know I will have them for the rest of my life. Also the teachers are very supportive, and I feel comfortable going to my advisor if I have something going on and need someone to talk to." - Luke '21
A Student, a Teacher, and an Idea
At Midland, we believe that the key to education is a student, a teacher, and an idea. We thoughtfully select teachers to join our team, looking for bright, passionate, well-educated individuals who are ready to become an integral part of our community. Alison and José Juan are two shining examples of our Midland team!
ALISON NIKITOPOLOUS, HUMANITIES & CHOIR FACULTY Ever since attending boarding school, Alison's dream was to teach at one, preferably a school in California with a horse program. In addition, she wanted to be able to teach both Music and English. Imagine her surprise when a Midland position opened up that fulfilled all of these wishes. Continue reading Alison's bio here.

Want to chat with a Midland parent?
Midland parents are such a big part of the community, and the entire campus is thrilled when they are able to join us for Parents Weekends and Thanksgiving celebrations. They also know this community and the benefits of a Midland education better than anyone. Chat with them about anything from how it feels to have a child at boarding school to the particulars of life at Midland.
