5 Miles down figueroa mtn road...

Midland Images

Dear Prospective Family,

When you step on Midland’s campus for the first time, you can feel that there’s something magical here. I first started to feel it as I drove up into the mountains toward campus from the center of the small town of Los Olivos, where our campus is located. There’s a sense of adventure as you wind down a road surrounded by ranch land and national forest. It’s as though you’re part of a well-kept secret: you can tell that only so many people have traveled, or even know of, this road. And it only gets more magical from there.

From Stillman Dining Hall, you can almost hear the blaring music and laughter flowing from dish house. Walking among student cabins carries the feelings of peace and rest and echoes of deep conversation, a sense that countless lifelong friendships have been formed all around you. As you step into the Lumberyard classroom — not through a door, but through the space where a fourth wall would traditionally be — there’s an immediate knowledge that classes must feel different here. When you take a seat in the non-denominational chapel, you can feel the rich history of communities who have filled the room before you, bathed in the same dappled glow of stained glass. Even the paths themselves, winding around benches and picnic tables, feel full of stories and the possibility of adventure, especially as you look out on the vast expanses of campus.

I hope that you will come to visit campus soon so that you can feel all of this yourself as we give you a tour and introduce you to some of our faculty, students, dogs, and horses. (Just reply to this email to set up a time!) That said, we know that traveling to campus is not available for everyone right now, and our loved tradition of shadow days is also on hold. With that in mind, we figured we’d bring the shadow days to you over the course of the next few weeks, sharing our community and campus with you virtually. Today is all about the physical place: our 2,860 acres of land, classrooms with anywhere from zero to four walls, small private spaces like student cabins, and communal gathering spaces like outdoor classrooms and the history-filled chapel.

We’re so excited that you’ve joined us on this adventure, and we can’t wait to keep sharing the magic of Midland with you.

Warmly,

Lydia Felty Signature

Cabins:  a home away from home boarding experience

Midland Cabins

"Living in a cabin is everything I wanted and more. My cabin has become very cozy and decorated with aspects of my life. I easily would choose it over my room at home," says Luke '21. "Living with someone else is also an amazing experience because you gain a life long friend while learning life skills on how to live with someone in a healthy way."

2,860 acres: 35 miles of trails to hike, run, & ride!

Trails to explore

"There are so many things to do at Midland!" notes Emma '23. "During half-holidays I can spend the whole afternoon outside. Sometimes my friends and I bike or walk out to the Reservoir or hang out on the field. I never worry about being bored here!"

Fun Midland News You May Have Missed

This week, as students settled into week two of Remote Learning for the Fall Semester, our Sophomore class reminisced on the place where (they) live, as part of Orion Magazine's "The Place Where You Live" project. Zoe '23 wrote her piece about a recent visit to Midland, and her nostalgia for pre-quarantine Midland caught the general feeling of our community. You can read her piece here.

Our LatinX club celebrated Mexican Independence Day by sharing some of their favorite music, recipes and poetry with the school community. We hope you enjoy them, and we wish you a happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
