a peak into our campus REopening

Midland Images

Dear Prospective Family,

Fall has been creeping in bit by bit, and these last waning days of October have finally brought the first truly cold days of the year. The seasons continue their never-ending cycle. But for many Midland parents, these days mark an important, singular milestone. These are days when something truly extraordinary happened.

The faculty feel a tremendous sense of awe when we think about our partnership with families. In these last days of October, families packed bags and cars. A few parted with their child at an airport. Some drove 1,000 miles, some only 10 miles. Ultimately, all students turned off Highway 154 onto Figueroa Mountain Road. They drove past fallow fields, fields of hay, and fields of pumpkins. Field after field for 5.1 miles. Some may have encountered wild turkeys, a lone bike rider, or even a tarantula or two. They turned a bend in the road and Grass Mountain revealed itself, a guardian over our small village. Finally, the car turned right. Horses grazed lazily on the right, the garden beckoned on the left. The car slowed to navigate the speed bumps. Christopher and Ami greeted and welcomed everyone. In the parking lot, all the stuff each child needs moved from one vehicle to another. It was really happening!

What our families did by sending their child to begin school in person demonstrates two things worth acknowledging. The level of trust they have in their child is strong enough that they know that their child will be able to manage without them. AND the level of trust they have for Midland is strong enough that they are willing to let us care for their child. In the midst of a pandemic and at a time when so much uncertainty swirls around all of us, we feel especially honored to partner with each of our families as we, collectively, begin a new journey.

We hope that you will continue on your Midland journey into future years, joining us on extraordinary days like this one (hopefully, in less pandemic-y-circumstances).

We hope that someday you’ll have the same sense of homecoming upon stepping onto this 2,860 acre campus as each student felt returning this past week.

We know that the first step in discovering if Midland could be your home is seeing campus for yourself, in person or virtually. We hope you’ll come visit us soon.

We are so excited for the days and months ahead.

Warmly,

Cierra & Lydia

They're Back! Welcoming our Students Home Midland students have returned

Over the last week, we've welcomed our students back in safe stages, bringing them together for the first time while rising to the challenges posed by the pandemic. Cohorts, masks, social distancing, hand washing and so many more safety measures have taken root at the foundation of Midland's fall semester. Upon that foundation, we've crafted a program like no other.

Our seniors are rising to the challenge as they lead an orientation program with fantastic, distanced games and get-to-know-you icebreakers (learning faces and names is especially challenging with masks!).

Meanwhile, we're nourishing our students with warm, home cooked meals straight from the Midland farm and garden. Yesterday, students completed a campus scavenger hunt to discover the array of outdoor classrooms they'll be attending classes at through the next weeks and months.

In the evening, our entire community headed out to Midland's foothills for a Hardluck, a night out under the stars surrounded by their new friends and peers. They're bonding, (re)connecting, learning, and developing themselves as they ground deeper into this place they call home.
