Dear Prospective Family,
Greetings from Midland!
Two weeks into January, and the new year is already like none other. We are all in the midst of chaotic times, from political and social unrest to a global pandemic that has undoubtedly affected each of us personally. The impacts on our community, both direct and indirect, feel significant, which makes me even more grateful to be part of this thoughtful and connected community. With health and safety protocols in place, we are glad to be welcoming our students back to campus in just a few days and to be weathering these challenges together.
With the February 15th application deadline approaching, I wanted to encourage you to take a closer look at Midland. When our two sons were in middle school, my wife and I began to think carefully about what sort of high school experience we wanted them to have. We wanted them to be challenged intellectually and academically prepared for college, yet we also knew that developing a broader set of life skills was equally important.
At Midland, students get so much more than just academic preparation. They are learning some of the time-honored values that are getting more and more difficult to teach in the world today. They are learning the lessons of contributing to something bigger than themselves, the value of steady work, and the joy of face-to-face relationships that are built on shared experiences with an uncommonly diverse set of people and perspectives.
I recently read an article that posits students learn best when relationship quality is at the center of education. The scale of our school and the depth of our collective engagement means the integrity and quality of the relationships within our community are unparalleled. We all work together to run the school, from washing dishes and picking fresh produce in the garden, to cleaning classrooms and making dessert for the whole community. The resulting relationships are the springboard for our greater success both as a community and as individuals.
These values, a core piece of Midland from its founding, remind us that even in a fractious moment, each of us is still a part of something greater than ourselves. Our community has the strength and wherewithal to look after one another and to extend a firm and stable hand outward to the world.
I know that choosing a high school is a big decision, and I hope you will connect with the Midland community through our weekly Wednesday Q&A-focused webinars to hear for yourself what makes this place special and strong. Please don't hesitate to be in touch with me directly as you sort out choices and options.
Warm Regards,
Christopher Barnes Head of School
