Straight from the source: Your faq answered

Dear Prospective Family,

As January at Midland comes to a close with ample rain, most of us at Midland are cozied up with our wood-burning stoves and a cup of tea to keep us warm. We’ve also been delighted over the past week to hear that you all enjoyed last week’s newsletter with students’ perspectives on some of our most frequently asked questions. So this week, we bring you perspectives from more voices in our community: our faculty!

If you would like to hear more from our faculty than is shared here, we recommend checking some of our previous webinars: with a variety of our faculty, with our Dean of Academics and Dean of Experiential Learning, and with our Head of School. We are also more than happy to connect you with members of our faculty, student, and parent communities — just reply to this email, and we’ll put you in touch. And, of course, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with any questions about the admissions or application process.

Warmly,

Cierra & Lydia
Midland's Admissions Team

P.S. Our application deadline is fast approaching on February 15th, 2021! If you haven't already, start your application here.

What stands out about Midland's academic experience?

"Not only do students benefit from small class sizes with skilled educators who are passionate about what they teach — but they also learn to balance school work with their on campus job, their sports, etc — all important life skills! We also strive to meet students where they are at, giving them appropriately challenging material and courses. Faculty are super available to support students, AND students learn greater autonomy by having to schedule those meetings with faculty themselves, learning to be resourceful and resilient in the process." - Ellie Moore, Dean of Academics

"I can't imagine that any other high school could possibly provide the level of individualized instruction that Midland offers at every level of mathematics. In Algebra 1, we work one on one with students in every class, developing mastery and holding their work to a high standard. Across my mathematics classes, I prepare students for college by giving them a strong mathematical foundation, by helping them to find pleasure and joy in learning and understanding mathematics, and by helping them learn to help themselves." - Charlotte Greenblatt, Math Faculty

What's your favorite part of the Midland day?

"Being in chapel: the silence, the rough, redwood boards, the space holding an entire community of people sharing what is dear, today and reaching back throughout the school's history."  - Genevieve '97, Spanish & Humanities Faculty

How do you think the boarding experience enhances a high school education?

"In many ways!  Teenagers want independence and responsibility.  A boarding experience allows them to be independent and responsible for taking care of themselves within a controlled and supportive environment.

"In a boarding environment, teachers know their students both in and out of the classroom.  I remember a NYT article last year reporting on students' increased levels of learning when they feel a connection to their teachers.  The boarding environment allows students and teachers the opportunity to develop the connections that enhance learning."  - Genevieve Herrick ‘97, Spanish & Humanities Faculty

"Students learn non-academic college skills without even realizing it. Waking up on their own, doing laundry, keeping a room clean, managing time and temperature, communicating needs, asking the right person for help.

"We also teach invaluable academic college skills in an environment that is similar to many colleges. Students cannot put on one persona for school and another at home. They learn to embrace their authentic selves, even during the difficult times. Our students become happy, tough, and resilient through the process."  - Alison Nikitopoulos, Humanities Faculty

"The boarding experience enables students to develop working relationships as well as deeper friendships. Students learn advocacy and communication skills that prepare them for interacting with folks across the generations and different walks of life. Students and faculty live on campus together in an environment where no body gets to leave and avoid conflict and difficult situations. They learn to deal with and front all situations. The boarding experience also gives students an environment where they can connect with themselves and develop a sense of place." - José Juan Ibarra '87, Dean of Students
