Current Students answer your faq

Dear Prospective Family,

Here on campus, our students and faculty are gearing up for next week's MIDterms, which look a little different than you might expect. Midland Term (or MIDterm, as we like to call it) is five days of experiential learning will not only allow a break from the Midland routine, but also give our students incredible opportunities to explore topics that don’t fit within the classroom “walls” (...of course, many of our classrooms are outdoors this year, but we think you know what we mean). This year, students will be engaged in (what we think are) the coolest of projects: an investigation of boarding schools and privilege that will be presented in the form of a filmed play; a Horse and Ranch Intensive; a biking and hiking excursion from Midland to the ocean and back to surf; a Linoleum Printmaking Extravaganza; and more.

And over in the Admission Office, we are full of anticipation for our application reading time. Based on the glimpses we've gotten of your applications — from the kind words of your teachers to intriguing photos and videos in your supplements — we know that digging into applications is going to bring so much joy and wonder. We can't wait to get to know you even better through them.

If you're still finishing up your application, please do reach out with any questions you have over the next three days, and please don't forget to respond to this email to set up your interview if you haven't yet. Although we're sure you have the date memorized by heart, as a reminder, applications are due Monday, February 15. If you are applying for financial assistance, please remember that your financial aid application is also due on Monday, February 15 (more details below).

To those of you looking to apply for the 2022-23 academic year, this will be our last weekly Friday email for a bit, as we turn our focus to our current applicants. We look forward to reconnecting with you later in the spring when we will be able to turn our attention to you! In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions at all.

And for all of you, we are delighted to share one last round of FAQ — for now, at least. We hope that your lingering questions are answered by our students below.

Enjoy!

P.S. Our application deadline is fast approaching on February 15th, 2021! If you haven't already, finish your application here and reply to this email to set up your interview.

What is your favorite time of day (or activity) at Midland?

“My favorite part of the day at Midland is all of the little things that make living on campus so great. Picking strawberries while laughing with friends, riding your bike back from the farm right as the sun is setting, blasting music in the bathroom and screaming the lyrics, cake on Fridays, and running to breakfast. If I had to pick just one thing I love during the day it would be meals. I love getting to sit down and enjoy the delicious food with my friends. I love our conversations and getting to all be together. “ -Kate ’23

Playing frisbee

“I really can’t decide between sports or half holidays. I enjoy the sport I was in, FRSH (Frisbee, Running, Surfing & Hiking), in which we hike on the school’s various trails. And since I’m new, it was a great experience to look at the school’s trails best views. But I also enjoy half holidays since it’s just free time for my friends and I to go play ping pong or basketball, or go on a hike somewhere as a group.” -David ’24

Real talk: do you enjoy the Jobs Program?

“I think the jobs program is one of the best things about Midland. Everyone has shared responsibilities that all rely on one another, whether its dish house or bell ringer or classroom cleaner. At the end of the day, having your own job brings an sense of pride of the work you put into the community.” -Emma ’23

“I do truly enjoy the jobs program. It provides structure within the community, and it allows every person to feel useful and included in some way.” -Melia ’21

Tell me more about living in a cabin. How is it different from a traditional dorm?

students in lower yard cabin

"The feeling of independence, and being in a space that, in some ways, feels more like yours than your own house - at least it does for me." -Will '21

"I love my cabin! I feel like it is truly my own space that I can decorate to resemble myself and inner thoughts. I also love having roommates, two in my case because I'm in a triple. They never fail to entertain (and annoy!) me to the fullest extent! Kind of like siblings, you love them and you also kind of want to lock them outside :)" -Kendra '24

"Living in a cabin is awesome! Unlike other dorms you are one door away from the outdoors. There is so much charm and character in each of the cabins, from the wood stoves, to the etchings from former students on the walls. You get the responsibility to take care of and properly maintain your own cabin. It truly feels like home!" -Kate '23

How's the food?

"The Midland food is absolutely amazing! It’s so satisfying to be able to say that you planted the lettuce that you are having as a salad, or that you picked the tomatoes for the ketchup." - Zoe '23

eating in stillman

"Even as a picky eater, I think the food has been really good. There have been a few days where I wasn't a big fan of a specific meal, but the next week's foods made up for it! -Mattox '24

"The food is much better than I could have hoped! Gloria's cooking is far superior to everything!" -Taylor '24
